Wear-time monitoring for amblyopia treatment
AmblyoSense measures how long children wear their glasses and eye patch during amblyopia treatment. Families read out the sensor with the app, and clinicians follow progress between visits. The platform is developed by SteadySense GmbH for the OPTAR research study.
Instructions for use
Deutsch: Gebrauchsanweisung
This guide is for parents and guardians taking part in the OPTAR study. The app records how long your child wears the eye patch or glasses and passes the wear time on to your care team. Your clinic's instructions always take precedence over this guide.
Safety information
[To be written and approved by the study lead / QM: e.g. skin irritation, handling the sensor, disposal, what to do in case of discomfort.]
What you need
- a smartphone with NFC: iPhone 7 or later with iOS 15.5 or later, or an Android phone with NFC running Android 7.0 or later
- the login details or login QR code from your clinic
- a sensor in the eye patch or on the glasses
Signing in
Tap Sign in with QR code and scan the code your clinic gave you. Alternatively, sign in with the email and password from your documents. The camera is only used to read the QR code. Each QR code works once – if you have lost your login details, your clinic can create a new one.
On first launch the app asks for a name for your child. This name stays on your phone only and is never transmitted.
Activating a sensor
A new sensor has to be activated once before it starts measuring:
- Tap Activate new patch sensor or Activate new glasses sensor.
- Hold the phone against the sensor (iPhone: with its top edge; Android: with its back) until the activation is confirmed.
If you read a sensor that has not been activated yet, the app asks whether it belongs to the patch or the glasses and then activates it.
Wearing the patch or glasses
Eye patch: stick the patch centrally over your child's good eye – this makes the weaker eye do the work. Keep it free of creases and in good contact with the skin so the sensor can detect wear time.
Glasses: the sensor sits on the inside of the temple arm, as close to the temple as possible. Make sure it lightly touches the skin.
How many hours a day your child should wear the patch or glasses is set by your clinic.
Reading the sensor every day
Read the sensor at least once a day, ideally in the evening after wearing:
- Tap Read sensor.
- Hold the phone against the patch or the sensor on the temple arm until a vibration confirms it.
The wear time is then transferred to the app and stored for your care team. The sensor can only hold a limited number of readings; when its memory runs low, the app reminds you to read it.
Today, history and medals
What the app shows you about wear time depends on the study schedule. Depending on your participation, wear time, daily goal and history appear only after some time or not at all during the study – the app then shows the current study day instead. Wear time is recorded and passed on to your care team in every case. Please keep wearing and reading the sensor every day.
Once the display is unlocked, the Today screen shows how long your child has worn the device today and how much is left to reach the daily goal. View history shows the wear time of recent days, the average and the days the goal was reached. Regular wear earns weekly medals.
Notes and messages from the clinic
Use Notes to record when something did not go as planned, for example when the patch was taken off for sports. Your care team can see these notes. Messages from your clinic appear under Clinic; new messages are marked with a yellow dot.
Replacing the sensor after 21 days
A sensor lasts about 21 days. When you read it on the second-to-last and the last day, the app tells you. Then activate a new sensor before the patch or glasses are worn again – otherwise nothing is measured.
If reading fails
- Read error / timeout
- Hold the phone still against the sensor a little longer and try again.
- Unknown sensor
- Check that you are scanning the AmblyoSense sensor on the patch or glasses.
- Low battery / sensor damaged
- Activate a new sensor. If problems persist, contact your clinic.

Gebrauchsanweisung
English: Instructions for use
Was du brauchst
